Ragged Company (Pages 185-376)
Heroes and heroines face tough tests on their journeys, and at times in helping others, often appear and aid them. Pick 2 instances in the novel, where a character was tested and who was the hero or heroine who came to his or her aid? Do you feel the hero or heroine could have done more to help that character? Lastly, think of an individual who you believe to be a hero or heroine and how has this person helped you through various tests in life when you needed help or support the most.
There are several instances in this novel in which a character came across a test and was aided by another character acting in a “hero” position, though the two that stuck out to me were the company after moving into a proper home, and Double Dick, before he went missing. The company’s housing and living setup was aided by none other than Granite. Though James (their legal representative) and later Margo were brought in to help, none of this could have been possible without Granite. He ensured that the group was well in this time of novelty and the unknown, took into concern their needs and pasts, as well as their priorities for living space. Granite did as best he could, and I believe that was enough. As for Dick, he was stuck in a vicious cycle. Towards the end of the book, his nightmares had gotten to a point where he could no longer allow himself proper sleeping hours, for fear that he’d fall into the nightmare again. His heroes were his ragged company, and his biggest hero of all was Digger. His company expressed their concern for him, setting up possible ways to help him confront and slowly heal that hurt, while Digger was Dick’s ultimate hero: the “I want to be you when I grow up” person in Dick’s life, even as an adult. Despite this, I don’t think they did enough. Dick still wound up in a bad place (The Rainbow Motel) among bad people (a sleazy man he thought to be his childhood friend), and that led to the greatest consequence of all: death. The intent was wholly there, but with the hesitation and a lack of timely action that loomed over their plans, nothing was truly ever done.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of my own personal heroes, I can’t quite place just one person in this role. I’ve had the chance to meet plenty of incredible people, so many of which have helped me through my own trials and tests when I needed it most (whether they knew it or not). From fictional to real, from my mother to my dear friends, or from distant relatives to star-crossed strangers: each one has offered something. Whether that something be a place to relate to and find joy, words of advice, physical help, or even a simple friendly conversation when I needed it most, it’s been something. I think that serves as a good reflection on the fact that we can all be someone’s hero, by simply doing a kind deed or treating someone with gentle respect.
I agree Jamey, I have met the most lovely people and they have been strangers, you can truly find a friend anywhere.
DeleteFriends are there for you when you need them most and hold you up when you crumble. Sometimes just a nice chat is enough to lift your spirits and having a friend to talk to is always important.
Granite was a great friend to the company and was there for them in their time of need and never left even after they settled down and got a house, he visited them often for a talk or even just a movie.
During different points in the novel, I feel that all the characters were each other’s hero or heroine that helped them through a tough time. A moment that stuck out to me was when the boys went missing a few days into being rich and Amelia was the heroine that re-traced their steps and was able to find them before it was too late, as for the boys who were drinking heavily and messing with the wrong crowd of men. Her worrying about them and seeking out Granite, Margo and James’ help to find them was the reason Dick didn’t die from alcohol poisoning that night, since no one else that was there would have noticed the state he was in or would have been able to rush him to the hospital in time. The love and care that Amelia has for them is why she is all of their heroine that night.
ReplyDeleteAnother part that I think shows the depth of their friendship is when they all could tell something was off with Dick, since he wasn’t sleeping and was forcing himself to stay up watching movies while drinking. Digger was the hero in this situation that knew how to handle him best, and decided it was best if Dick just had company during the night to watch the movies with and eventually he would sleep and know the presence of someone else is there. This was working well until they watched a movie that triggered Dick’s trauma, which caused him to run away. I believe that they should have maybe tried talking to Dick about what was going on in his head. Even if it wasn’t the ‘rounder way’ to talk about their feelings, they weren’t on the street anymore so that rounder rule shouldn’t have applied anymore especially when it was evident that something was seriously bothering him.
I know that I have many people in my life that have helped me through a lot, but the person I think deserves to be called my personal heroine is my best friend Katie. She has always been there for me when I needed someone to talk to, especially this past year going through some of the hardest things I have ever had to, I know it would have been way more challenging if I didn’t have her by my side. She is the person who understands me better than anyone else and I know I can always count on her to have my back or be the one to give me the best advice when I have a problem. She never fails to make me smile or laugh and cheer me up on a bad day with her weird jokes or funny pictures she sends me, as well as daily pictures of her cats. I am so happy I met her and I truly believe she is my platonic soulmate.
Hannah, I fully agree that a friend is the best hero or heroine a person could have. I was especially moved by how Amelia rallied everyone to look for the boys; fortunately, they discovered Dick in time. Finding a good friend who will always be there for you might be challenging, but it can be even more challenging to find someone who truly gets you and can notice when you're down. Finding a friend like that is crucial since they already know when anything is off, and you don't need to inform them. Even though it's not the rounders way to talk about things, you can't just keep things locked up; you need to talk about them in order to fully start to heal. I agree that the way they assisted Dick and took turns watching movies with him to help him get more sleep was genuinely helpful.
DeleteHannah as for your hero, and as I have stated, a friend is the best kind of hero or heroine you can get. You need someone who is not a part of your family to comfort you and who will provide you a different viewpoint than a family member might not have.
Hannah, I completely agree with the two points you have chosen, regarding events where characters were heroes. Once the boys had gone missing shortly after arriving at the hotel, Amelia became concerned. She went out searching for them as she thought that they might have been in trouble. She found them at the perfect time in order to be able to save Double Dick. If she had just stayed at the hotel and not worried about her boys, Dick would have died from alcohol poisoning. I found this very heroic, and she continued to be a heroine to the boys throughout the entire novel. I also agree that attempting to help Dick sleep was very heroic. The gang knew that he had been staying up all night watching movies, and only going to sleep in the morning. Digger wanted to help his friend, so during the night, he decided to start watching movies with him along with the rest of the gang. This would help Dick fall asleep as he knew there was someone by his side.
DeleteConcerning your choice for your personal heroine, I think that a friend is one of the best heroes that someone can have in their lives. Friends are always there for you no matter what and they offer support in times that you need it. This can sometimes be by simply making you laugh when you are in a bad mood or giving you helpful advice when it is needed. Friends help each other become better people.
A time when help was needed is definitely when the Ragged Company needed someone to make them IDs so they could take the money that Digger won in the lottery. The “hero” who came to their aid was James Merton who made their ID cards and set up bank accounts for all of them. James is a lawyer who is close friends with Granite, he helped Granite sell his house. When Granite asked James for help, he was very surprised by who he was being asked to help but he put all his personal feelings aside to come to the aid of the company. James helped as much as he could in my opinion because there isn’t a lot you can do to prepare these people for the jump in class they were about to take.
ReplyDeleteAnother time help was given was when Amelia first met Double Dick. He was a small sickly boy who just needed someone to lean on and Amelia provided that for him when he was alone and scared. Amelia was a rounder for a long time and was shown a dream of Dick. Dick would have never survived without One Sky helping and guiding him. If he was alone he would not have lasted as long as he did. Amelia could have done more by teaching him the do’s and don’ts of life so that maybe he would not have gotten caught up with the wrong crowd.
A lot of people have helped me over the years, and I couldn’t have survived without my friend group, but there is one person that sticks out to me as unique and it is my friend Elizabeth. I volunteered at her shelter with my twin the moment 9th grade started and even with all of the covid safety measures we still clicked and became very close friends, almost like I had known her for years. If I had not taken the chance to get my hours there, I don’t think I would have made it through quarantine. Elizabeth is such a dear friend and even though she is not even close to my age we still feel like vast friends, sometimes I even see her as a mother figure. The people you didn’t expect can turn into lifelong friends and you would never suspect it, which makes meeting new people a very exciting thing for me.
Kiera, I agree with the fact that James Merton is a hero. People tend to forget that just because a person isn’t one of the main characters, doesn’t mean they cannot do great things and make a big impact on them. It takes a lot of trust in Granite and courage to help a group of strangers for free. I also agree that if Amelia didn’t find and take care of Dick, he would be with the wrong crowd and be in a lot more danger. Amelia often cares for the people she recruits into her group like a mother. As a motherly figure, she would help and guide people like Dick and teach them the rights and wrongs of the street, and of society in general. I find your story about your friend Elizabeth very beautiful. It can be rare to meet people that make you feel like you’ve known them forever and to form such a unique bond. I hope you find more exciting opportunities to meet new people like Elizabeth.
DeleteThere are several instances throughout the novel that has been heroic in all sorts of different ways. I took the time to condense many of the heroic events into two that I found to be the most important. The group of “rounders” is a perfect example or definition of a hero or heroine. They are like a small family that looks out and cares for each other no matter where they are, on the streets or in some fancy hotel. The first instance that I found to be heroic was the time when Granite and James Merton, (Granite’s lawyer) helped the rounders to claim their winnings from the lottery ticket. If it weren’t for Granite acknowledging the four chronically homeless people and setting aside his differences, the rounder’s lives would most likely have been way different than what it is today. Granite made the right choice of not “Judging a Book by Its Cover” when he met the group of rounders that day in the movie theatre. Instead, he chose to acknowledge the four homeless and later established a friendship with them. So, it is safe to say that Granite has been a big part of the rounder’s lives in terms of being a hero.
ReplyDeleteThe second heroic event I chose that took place in book three, was when Timber was forced to sell almost all his and his wife Sylvain’s assets to keep up with medical bills for his wife’s horrific accident. After Sylvain was hit by the drunk driver (Cameron Gracey), she directly went into a coma. This accident forced Sylvain to be hospitalized which left Timber traumatized and had no choice but for Timber to pay for her care. With Timber’s strong love for Sylvain, he sold everything they had together, including his car and lastly the house they had bought on Indian road, leaving Timber homeless again. But he did it for Sylvain. With these heroic actions, Sylvain was able to be on life support until she woke up and was able to see the light of day again all thanks to Timber. Her hero.
For me, when it comes to heroes or heroines, that could be anybody. It could be a friend, a family member, or who knows. It could even be a homeless stranger. But through my toughest times, my parents were the ones who I truly consider my heroes. Throughout my life, my parents provided me with a lot of wisdom and valuable life lessons. They’ve taught me to do the best I can in everything and to be contempt with what I have. They’ve been there for me ever since I was born and up until now. A lot has changed in the past sixteen years for me, a lot of decisions and sacrifices had to be made and a lot of losses had to be dealt with. Without my parents in the equation, I’d have no idea where I would be today or whether I would be setting myself up for failure or success. My parents will always be my biggest asset, and I will never stop trying to make them proud, especially my father.
Ricardo, I fully agree that these characters can be seen as hero’s. They were truly selfless and displayed the qualities of a hero. Nothing could have been changed for the better if James hadn’t helped the group. Because of his heroic acts, the lives of the members in the groups have been forever changed. Timbers story is truly heartbreaking. He was selfless and gave up everything in the name of love. I find the way you speak of your parents refreshing. I understand the feeling of gratitude and the never ending need to make them proud.
DeleteI agree with Ricardo, all the characters stood out to be heroes in their own way. They all had each other's backs and respected each other. Granite had a huge hero moment with the lottery ticket, he had a choice, and chose the heroic decision to help. Timber is another fitting example; he made a brave thoughtful decision that forever changed his life but saved someone else's. Those are all characteristics of a true hero. Ricardo stated a hero can be anyone which is absolutely true. They can show up unexpectedly or they may have been there the whole time. My parents have also shown me wisdom and every day they continue to stay strong for us, that is why they are heroes.

ReplyDeleteIn this Novel, hero stories are not what you might think of, but through the bad there are little signs of heroism. While looking deeply into the book, I found many heroes and heroines. One for the Dead provides the first illustration of this; she unknowingly helped those three boys throughout the entire book. She is respected and followed by Digger, Timber, and Double Dick since they all regard her as a "leader". They were all brought together by Amelia with the aid of the shadowed ones, and as a result of her, they are never left alone. They chose Indian Road for their home, but Amelia had no idea that Double Dick had already chosen it on her account because she was Indian. The boys feel safe around her. She serves as their mother figure, so they can turn to her whenever he needed consolation. She occasionally tells the tales Grandma One Sky told her in order to impart wisdom and insight, aware that as she gets older, she will resemble her grandmother more and more. Her grandma shared these tales with her for comfort and guidance, and now by Amelia sharing them with the boys, she is doing the same. She is the boys knight in shining armor always there for them to lean on. The second example of a hero isn't necessarily what you would call a hero. The movie industry is heavily emphasized in this book, and in my opinion, each character's hero is found in a movie. They all agree that some movies have meaning that reaches out to touch them, even though they all have differing opinions on the films. Throughout this book, the movies have forced many of them to confront their pasts in order to go on and feel at home. Timber is a prime example of this; following the viewing of "An affair to Remember," he fled, found closure, and is now happier than ever and engaged in the activities he formerly loved. A hero is there to offer you a step up to go where you want to go; they can only do so much to aid you; the rest is up to you to figure out. These two heroes acted in accordance with their abilities and what they thought was the right thing to do.
My heroine is my grandma. I can connect this to Amelia since, like her grandmother, she was always there to comfort her and give her stories. My grandma has always been there to mentor me, and I have always looked up to her. I don't know how grandmothers do it, but they always know what to say and how to say it, and she always has the right thing to say to make me feel better. Since I've spent the majority of my life living next to her, I can always walk over to chat. She always kept me safe and always looks out for me even when I think I don’t need it. In my opinion, there is no better heroine than the one I have.
Sydney, I like the point you made about Amelia being like their mother figure, I think she fills this role perfectly for them and agree with you that she is turning into grandma One Sky. I like how she brought them all together and was like their rock through the whole story, who was there for them no matter what and lead them all to happiness towards the end of the book. I love the idea you brought up about how the movies were like all of their hero in one way or another and how it helped them each find peace. I think if it weren’t for the movies they never would have gotten as far as they did in terms of healing individually from rough pasts. I think it is very sweet that your grandmother is your heroine, and I agree that they have this special thing to them that always know how to make others feel better. Grandmothers always deserve so much respect and always have great lessons to teach us with that mentoring kind of way.
DeleteSydney, I completely agree with your statement about the movies and the characters in the book. The Ragged Company characters seem to have found comfort in watching movies together. They always reflect on the movie they have seen. Even after winning the lottery, they promised each other that no matter how much is going to change, they will continue to watch movies all together. They always decide together what movie they are going to watch, and it has brought and kept them together. Double Dick was the most passionate about movies, and I find it ironic that it was the movie “Ironweed” that led him towards his death.
DeleteIn the novel Ragged Company, the main characters treat each other like family and are always there for each other. There are many instances in the book that are examples of the main characters helping one another. One instance is when it was the first night in the hotel for Amelia, Digger, Dick and Timber. That night Digger wasn’t at the hotel, so Timber and Dick went to look for him, which resulted in Amelia having to look for all of them. By Amelia acting on her motherly instincts and checking on her boys, she saved their lives or more specifically Dicks life. Amelia was the only one who knew that her boys would be where Dick used to sleep and because she knew that Granite, Margo and she were able to get to Dick and save him from alcohol poisoning. Amelia was Dicks heroine. That night, Timber and Dick were tested to see if they could better themselves and change their bad habits after such a sudden change in their lives. Amelia was there for them, whatever they chose, even if it was a bad choice. I do not think there was anything Amelia could have done more to help Dick. The boys are grown adults that should not always need Amelia to be their babysitter. Amelia could not have known that Digger did not return or that Timber and Digger left in the middle of the night before it happened. Amelia did everything she could when she knew her friends were missing and that saved their lives.
ReplyDeleteAnother instance where the group has supported their friend through a tough time was when Timbers friends were there for him when he wanted to pursue his curiosities about Sylvan. When Sylvan could not regain her memory after the crash, it scared and hurt Timber which caused him to flee all those years ago. After many years, Timber wanted to get closure about what happened to Sylvan and confront his past. By doing this, he tested the lack of courage and huge amount of fear that his past self had revolving Sylvan. In the end, Timber overcame his past and got closure. Through this whole journey, all his friends were there for him. Every step of the way. They gave him space when he needed it, they helped find clues to where Sylvan was, and before Timber went to go see Sylvan his friend Digger talked to him and said that it will be okay and that they were here. While his friends didn’t literally save him from dying, they helped Timber connect with Sylvan and connect with his old wood carver self. Timbers friends were heroes by saving their friends old self from being shunned forever. Again, I do not think that Timbers friends could have done anything else so help him. After being friends with him for so long, they know when he needs help and when he wants space. If they had disrespected these boundaries, it would’ve done more harm on Timbers feelings than good and caused timber to shut them up. Since Timbers friends were there for him, they helped him get closure from his past.
For my own heroes it is hard to choose just one because there are so many people who have helped me when I needed it and made me the person I am today, but if I had to choose one person it would be my friend Raahina. I met her in grade 7 and when I did there was one thing about her that stuck out instantly. She was very real and was not at all judgemental. She would always state her mind and not give a care in the world about what others would think. This mindset of hers helped get me through difficult times in my life and what made me focus on myself and not on what other people thought of me. After being her friend all these years, she made that mindset rub off on me which helped me help others who were going through similar difficulties that I faced not too long ago.
In the novel, there are many instances where different characters demonstrate heroism. One of the instances that stuck out to me was when Granite helped Digger claim his winning lottery ticket. When Digger had first received the news of winning the lottery ($13.5 million), he had no way of claiming it. He had no personal identification (ID) with him as he did not need any. Being a rounder, he had no reason to carry around papers that would never be useful. He did not require to tell anything personal about himself to others. Digger was not the only one that was lacking the papers to claim his prize. The rest of the Ragged Company (One for The Dead, Timber, and Double Dick) also did not carry any personal identification. Amelia had come up with the idea of letting Granite claim the prize as she thought that he would have ID. Digger did not mind this idea, although he preferred to go to Charlie’s instead of going to the movie theatres to possibly run into him. After being talked into it by One for The Dead and Double Dick, he decided to play the ‘what if game’. He said that if Granite was the person to come out of the next cab they saw, he would ask him for aid in claiming his winning lottery ticket. Granite turned out to be the person to come out of the next cab and Digger was shocked. As Amelia had expected, Granite decided to help “the group” claim their prize. I found this to be very heroic as Granite could have either said no, or claimed the prize money and decide to keep it all to himself. He helped people that he had only seen a couple of times and barely knew, out of kindness. He did the right thing in helping people that could use the money to better their lives.
ReplyDeleteAnother occasion in which a character in the novel was heroic, was when Timber sold everything he had to help his wife who was in the hospital. One day, when coming back from winning a big bet he had put on a soccer match, Cameron Gracey hit Timber’s wife Sylvan with a truck. Cameron had been a railroad engineer for thirty years until he was pensioned off for having problems with liquor on the job. He lived a block away from Timber and his wife. Cam was a heavy drinker that would spend almost all of his time betting on soccer and rugby matches. After winning a large amount of money he decided to drive home to celebrate. He was drunk and yet he still got in his truck instead of calling for a taxi or asking for a ride. He hit Sylvan hard enough to break almost all her bones and put her in a coma. The hospital bills that Timber was receiving started to become more expensive as Sylvan was moved into a private unit after four months. He sold everything he had including his car, his house decorations, his home etc., in hopes that his wife would awake from her coma. He lived in a hotel room in order to help the person that he loved. When Sylvan woke up, she had been diagnosed with a memory disorder. She did not remember anyone or anything from before the accident. It was like she had been reborn. Timber was deeply saddened about his wife’s current state as she did not even remember who he was. He was now a stranger to her. Despite knowing this, he would continue to visit her, hoping that she would regain her memory. I found this very heroic as he refused to give up on his wife as he believed that she would recover from the accident.
During this novel, different members of the Ragged Company were constantly looking out for each other. Personally, I think that Double Dick was a hero. Although his death brought his friends a great amount of pain it also brought them all peace, specifically Amelia. Her entire life was filled with pain and death and this pain followed her in the form of what she called the “shadowed ones”. Even though the shadowed ones might have brought some sort of peace to her they were mostly a reminder of the pain and heartbreak that she couldn’t escape. After Dick’s death I would have assumed that this pain would had continued with her, and even stronger. Instead, it ended, his death stopped the shadowed ones. When Granite told Dick’s story, he also told the story that shadow ones wanted to be told. This finally brought her the comfort that she deserved, and she was able to use this comfort to go and help other rounders. I don’t think Dick could have anything else to help Amelia or his friends because even if he had stayed alive, they would not have been able the find purpose or comfort in his death. Even though he didn’t do a specific action to help them, it was his honour and legacy that saved them.
ReplyDeleteThere is one character is specific who I believe would be considered the hero of this story. This would be Granite. Even though at some parts of the novel the rounders, especially Digger resented him for coming into their lives. He blamed all the mess, death and pain on him and the money. If you look at the big picture, he really saved them. They might have been okay with their simple lived on the street, but they certainly weren’t at peace. Each of them had the stories of their past hidden deep inside that they would drown with booze. It was because of the path that the money took them down where they were able to open up and face that pain. Granite was there each step of the way, whether it was initially getting them the money or supporting then as a friend. Some might say that he didn’t get involved enough and he could have done more to make the transition from the streets to “Square John” life smoother, but I disagree. I think that he did a great job at giving them space when it was needed which helped them truly find happiness on their own.
If I had to choose a hero or heroine, I would choose my parents. I am not able to choose just one of them because no matter what happens and where I am at, I know they are the two people I can rely on. As a typical teenager I don’t tell my parents everything that I would tell my friends but if I was truly going through a hard time, they would be the ones I would go to. There have been times when I have just been so overwhelmed that I would just break down into tears and cry. Even though they may not understand or relate to exactly what I was going through they were still able to help me. They would remind me that they we my age once too so they can try and understand why I feel that way and validate my problems. I also choose them as my heroes because they are an inspiration to me. Seeing how hard they work to give us everything we have is what motivates me to work hard. Those and just a handful of reasons why my parents are my heroes.
There are many situations in this novel where a character can be perceived as a hero/heroine. One character that persistently shows this trait in the novel is Amelia. When the cold snap engulfed the city, Amelia payed for herself and the boys to see a movie. This gesture may seem small, but when you’re homeless and struck in the cold anything is a blessing. After this situation I perceived Amelia as if she was the “mom” of the group. She was a consistent provider for the others in the group. Another example of this is when she met double dick. He was young, scared and alone. She became someone he could trust and and depend on. Without Amelias guidance, who knows where he would have ended up. For these reasons, I believe Amelia is a great example of a realistic heroine. There is more Amelia could have done, but living on the streets takes up a lot of time and energy as it is. She did more then what was expected of her. However, if she had taken the time to go in-depth of the right and wrongs its possible Double Dick wouldn’t have gotten into the wrong crowd and bad habits.
ReplyDeleteMany people throughout my life have helped me through difficult times, but one special person has truly understood and came to my aid. My best friend Hannah has been there for me when no one else was. I know I can always count on her to help me through rough patches and to comfort me when I most need it. The past few years have been very difficult and the one stable constant in my life was Hannah. I appreciate everything she has done for me and I would do anything to repay her kindness towards me. I am so lucky to have my very own heroine who I get to call my best friend.
Throughout this book there have been lots of moments when the characters have played roles of being either a hero or heroine to each other. The moment that stuck out the most to me was when the boys went missing shortly after walking into a new chapter of life where they are now rich. During this time Amelia played the role of being a heroine and tracking down the boys. Amelia arrived on time to help the boys in making the wise decision of realizing their mistakes of hanging out with the wrong crowd and drinking irresponsibly. Amelia’s decision of sticking with her gut and getting Granite, James and Margo to help her find them is how Double Dick survived that night. Without finding him in the state they did Double Dick would’ve suffered serious alcohol poisoning and no one would’ve been sober enough to recognize his state as they were all drinking heavily.
ReplyDeleteDuring my sixteen years of life, I have been lucky to have a very strong support system of family and friends to fall back on and be there for me no matter what. I consider my family my hero’s as they are the ones who stand up for me and always push and encourage me to be the best version of myself. I am so thankful to have my family who I consider my hero’s as they will always be there through the hardest and happiest times of my life.
Through this novel, there are multiple characters that aided others to act like a “hero” and/or a “heroine” . The two that stuck out to me the most were Amelia and Margo. Amelia started off as a homeless girl who suffered from addiction, but she had a lot of past experiences. When she was a kid, her big brother Irwin drowned while swimming in the lake they always swam in growing up. Soon after, she was sent to a residential school where she was badly treated but where she also learned how to read and write. In the novel we see a lot of examples where she helped the boys with knowledge since some of them have no education.
ReplyDeleteAnother person who proved to be a heroine was Margo when she helped Amelia and the boys with the lottery ticket so that they could have money and get off the street. She also is helping Amelia with the Deer Spirits Lodge which is a place where woman go to learn how to nurture themselves after being on the streets, prison, or any tough situation.
Lastly, my two heroes are my dad and my best friend Emma Lessard. My dad has always been there for me in any situation and has always tried his best to help me with anything I need. He is always there to give me good life advice and to help me with all my obstacles. Emma has been my best friend for over a year. I met her when I came to VCI, and she is exactly like me, and we get along well. She has always been there for me, and she is always cheering me up. She never fails to put a smile on my face when I am feeling down. She truly has a big impact in my life, and I am very grateful to have her and my dad with me.
Ragged Company showed several examples of being a true hero but the character that stood out the most was One for the Dead. Ever since she was little life has been hard but with all that pain, she used It and become an understanding, loving powerful person. She became a comfort person to people on the streets, she had enough strength to create her own family who she saw needed one. That takes a true hero. Another example was further in the book where she decided to keep being homeless even after all the money she had. One For the Dead knew her worth and decided she was better at helping people than not. I feel she did everything in her power to become the best version of herself and had a remarkable success. One for the Dead became a hero to other characters but as well the reader.
ReplyDeleteIn my life I have been lucky enough to have several caring, strong, and powerful people show up for me when I needed them most. Even though I have options on who my hero would be, my grandma wins that battle by a mile. My grandma was my best friend in every way possible and is a huge part of why I am who I am today. She was strong for not just me but everyone in my family, even on her hardest days. When I needed a getaway place, grandma's house was where I would be. She gave me advice when I struggled with hard things and the littlest things possible. A true hero in my opinion will still have a major effect on you even when they are gone, that is what made me realize how much of a hero she was to me.
